Gastaldi: Maldonado deserves some luck
12 July 2014 – Lotus Deputy Team Principal Federico Gastaldi has spoken out in support of Pastor Maldonado, arguing that the Venezuelan is due some "big-time luck" during the second half of the 2014 campaign.
Maldonado, who has failed to score a point in his first nine Grands Prix with the team, endured a particularly miserable Silverstone weekend; after being excluded from qualifying for failing to provide the required amount of fuel for a sample, he was tipped into the air by Sauber's Esteban Gutiérrez in the race and ultimately retired.
Heading to Hockenheim, the season's midway point, Gastaldi is hoping Maldonado's fortunes will change.
"If it balances out a little during a season then he is owed some big-time luck," Gastaldi commented.
"Through no fault of his own he got penalised in qualifying and started further back than the position he had earned [15th on the grid], and then in the race we all saw what happened with Esteban Gutiérrez.
"It was unfortunate that it affected him so much through the race because he was quick prior to that and, I am sure, would have been strong as it progressed. I hope that his luck will change from Hockenheim onwards."
Maldonado's most recent points finish came at last year's Hungarian Grand Prix, when he classified 10th.
