Magnussen praises McLaren upgrades
19 July 2014 – Kevin Magnussen has praised his McLaren team for the upgrades it has brought to this weekend's German Grand Prix.
The Dane trialled a new rear wing during Friday practice which was carried over and applied to both cars for the remainder of the weekend.
McLaren also made the decision to shorten its gear ratios overnight, using its one permitted 'joker' for the 2014 campaign.
Magnussen went on to qualify in fourth position, behind only Nico Rosberg's pole-sitting Mercedes and the Williams drivers.
"I don't think we came into this weekend thinking that P4 was our position, but there you go," said Magnussen.
"We had a new rear wing which was delivered early, so it was a fantastic job from the guys at the factory.
"Well done to the guys in the garage also for getting the most out of these new bits. It's been a really good day."
Although he was only 0.136 seconds adrift Felipe Massa's third-placed Williams in the final shootout, Magnussen reckons challenging for a podium finish on Sunday afternoon will be a tough ask.
"I think a podium is pretty much out of reach," Magnussen went on to explain.
"It will need a lot of luck for us to be on the podium but we will go for it. It's a race, the car is a lot heavier and the weather could be a lot different so that may change a lot of things."
Magnussen's team-mate, Jenson Button, was knocked out in Q2 and is set to start 11th.
