Hamilton avoids pit lane start after changes
20 July 2014 – Mercedes has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will be able to start the German Grand Prix from the grid, with the FIA accepting that his change of brake disc brand did not breach parc ferme conditions.
Following Hamilton's dramatic right-front brake failure in qualifying, the outfit made the decision to switch his Brembo discs for the Carbon Industrie product currently being used by team-mate and pole-sitter Nico Rosberg.
While there were fears that this would not come under the permitted parc ferme modifications, FIA Technical Delegate Jo Bauer assessed the situation on Sunday morning and viewed the replacement as acceptable.
"It must be clear that any replacement part a team wishes to fit is similar in mass, inertia and function to the original. Any parts removed will be retained by the FIA," reads Article 34.2 of the 2014 Sporting Regulations.
Hamilton's gearbox has been changed ahead of the race, however, meaning he drops from 15th to 20th.
