Azerbaijan to stage Grand Prix from 2016
25 July 2014 – Azerbaijan has confirmed that it will stage the European Grand Prix from the 2016 campaign.
There were plans for the Baku event to join the calendar next season, but organisers confirmed on Friday – after signing a deal with Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone – that it will join the fray a year later than planned.
"I am delighted to officially announce that we have signed a contract to bring Formula 1 racing to Baku in 2016," Mr. Azad Rahimov, Minister of Youth and Sport for Azerbaijan, said of the country's future Grand Prix.
"Our location at the crossroads of eastern Europe and western Asia is a new frontier for Formula 1 racing.
"Azerbaijan is a modern European country that has established a reputation as a centre of sporting excellence."
Ecclestone added of the agreement: "We are very happy that Baku has joined the Formula 1 family.
"This will be a street race, which will pass through interesting and picturesque parts of Baku."
Renowned designer Hermann Tilke will be tasked with formulating the circuit on the capital's streets.
It has so far been confirmed that the pit and paddock area will be based around the iconic Azadliq Square.
