Hamilton completes practice clean sweep
26 July 2014 – Lewis Hamilton topped Saturday morning's final practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, narrowly getting the better of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to make it three out of three ahead of qualifying.
Hamilton posted a 1:24.048 during the late runs on the Soft compound tyre, putting him 0.047s clear of Rosberg as the chequered flag dropped.
Rosberg's quickest time arrived on his third attempt, after the championship leader made a mistake at Turn 12 on his opening lap.
Reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel again finished third for Red Bull, reducing the gap to Hamilton to four tenths of a second.
Daniel Ricciardo and the leading Williams of Valtteri Bottas followed in fourth and fifth respectively.
Fernando Alonso, who did not post a time during the first half of the hour-long session, shot to the top of the timesheets on the Prime tyre, but he ultimately fell to sixth when the field switched to the softer rubber.
Kimi Räikkönen continued an encouraging weekend in seventh, ahead of McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen.
Toro Rosso drivers Jean-Éric Vergne and Daniil Kvyat rounded out the top 10 positions, with the remaining Williams and McLaren machines of Felipe Massa and Jenson Button narrowly missing out in 11th and 12th.
It was two-by-two for the midfield runners; Pastor Maldonado led Lotus team-mate Romain Grosjean, ahead of Sauber duo Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutiérrez and Force India's Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Pérez.
Kamui Kobayashi placed 19th to keep Caterham ahead of back-of-the-grid rivals Marussia in the run up to this afternoon's grid-deciding session, although Jules Bianchi was unable to complete a lap on Options.
