Räikkönen questioned Ferrari strategy
26 July 2014 – Kimi Räikkönen says he repeatedly questioned Ferrari's tyre strategy in the first phase of qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, during which he was eliminated by Marussia driver Jules Bianchi.
With Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and Lotus' Pastor Maldonado stopping as a result of technical problems, Räikkönen and team-mate Fernando Alonso tried to get through to Q2 using only the Medium tyre.
But Bianchi found a considerable amount of time on the Soft rubber and, to the surprise of the Ferrari crew, usurped Räikkönen by 0.064s.
"The plan was to go out but the team said we were fine," he explained.
"I questioned it a few times to be 100 per cent sure. The end result is what we can see. Yesterday afternoon and this morning it was a bit difficult to get grip with the harder tyres. With the Soft it's been quicker all weekend."
Alonso enjoyed a smoother afternoon, progressing to Q3 and claiming a spot on the third row of the grid.
"In Q3 we had the rain and Magnussen's crash, but we stayed calm to get a lap together," said Alonso.
"P5 on the clean side is good for us. We have a good possibility of a result. Dry or wet, we can be competitive.
"I think we are behind Williams and Red Bull; some circuits a bit better, some circuits a bit worse. We have two Red Bulls ahead, one Williams ahead and one behind. Hopefully we can go into the battle and get some points."
