Max Verstappen joins Red Bull Junior Team
12 August 2014 – Max Verstappen, son of ex-Formula 1 driver Jos, has signed up to Red Bull's junior programme.
The 16-year-old Dutchman, contesting his first season of single seater racing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, joins Frenchman Pierre Gasly, Spain's Carlos Sainz, Jr. and Britain's Alex Lynn in the team.
Verstappen will race as a Red Bull-backed driver for the first time at the upcoming Nürburgring Formula 3 event.
"We are very pleased to announce that Max Verstappen has accepted our invitation to join the Red Bull Junior Team," said a Red Bull statement, which also confirmed that Verstappen will take part in the Macau Grand Prix.
"It speaks for itself that I'm very happy and honoured to be a part of the Red Bull Junior Team, which has already brought so many drivers to Formula 1," said Verstappen, currently competing for Van Amersfoort Racing.
"I will seize this opportunity with both hands. I will do whatever I can to develop and get the maximum out of my career. I want to thank Dr. Helmut Marko for making this happen and Red Bull for the confidence shown in me."
Speculation had been growing over a potential Red Bull offer after Max and Jos attended last month's German Grand Prix and later met with Marko, the team's motorsport advisor, at the Red Bull Ring Formula 3 round.
Father Jos made 106 starts in the top echelon, racing for the Benetton, Simtek, Footwork, Tyrrell, Stewart, Arrows and Minardi teams. He claimed two podium finishes, with both coming in his debut campaign in 1994.
