Watson: Verstappen must grow up quickly
20 August 2014 – Ex-Formula 1 driver John Watson has warned that Max Verstappen will have to "grow up really quickly" next season.
Verstappen, who will become the youngest driver in Formula 1 history next year when he makes his debut in Australia, was confirmed by Scuderia Toro Rosso on Monday.
The Dutch driver has been racing in the European Formula Three Championship this year and only joined the Red Bull young driver programme last week.
"He's got a remarkable degree of self-confidence and assurance. I don't think the driving bit will be an issue whatsoever," Watson told British newspaper, The Daily Telegraph.
"But it might be more difficult in dealing with the enormously high expectation Red Bull place in their young drivers, which can be a huge pressure.
"He will have to grow up really quickly."
"[Also] the concern some of the more established drivers might have is are we bringing in drivers who are not emotionally or mentally mature to deal with difficult judgments, which they have got to make in milliseconds and it has got to be the right judgment," Watson added.
