Ricciardo 'staying grounded' amid title talk
26 August 2014 – Daniel Ricciardo says he is "staying grounded" and will not get carried away, despite suggestions he might have an outside chance of taking the title.
Ricciardo took his second win in a row and his third of the season in Belgium last weekend capitalising again after Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton clashed on the second lap.
However, despite his successes this year, he remains cautious and is still after all 64 points adrift of Rosberg and the championship lead.
"If I am within 50 points coming into Abu Dhabi then yeah [I would say I was in the hunt], but there is still a few races to go [before the finale]," he said.
"However, while it is still mathematically possible we will keep fighting. The win here was a big day for that. To come and steal some points on a circuit where we were not supposed to win is nice.
"But I think what is important, looking ahead, is to capitalise on the circuits that we should be strong on and if we can take maximum points at a couple of those then it is never over."
"I see good things ahead," he added. "As I said, If we can collect maximum points around here it gives us a bit more hope for the circuits that are going to come later in the season: Singapore, Suzuka, just a couple to mention.
"We are really motivated right now. It has been a really good day for us. It will keep us smiling for a while, but at the same time we will stay grounded.
"Monza we know will be tricky again but obviously the package we brought here was pretty racy, so, we will try and take something from here to Monza and then I think, as I said, Singapore and Suzuka will be pretty good for us."
Ricciardo also said again how pleased he has been with his year so far, his first with Red Bull's A team and alongside four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel.
"Obviously for me it is great, it is what I wanted to achieve, to get some race wins. To have three in twelve races I think has exceeded a few expectations," he continued.
"Let's say the in-team battle has gone really well [too]. Obviously I have showed speed throughout qualifying and also races now. I have demonstrated good racecraft and good consistency so I think the team has been really pleased and I have been pleased so we are in a good place.
"I am enjoying it more than ever. Each race that goes on I am having more and more fun so yeah, just having a good time."
