Verstappen compares driving style to Alonso
29 August 2014 – Newly-signed Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen, son of ex-Formula 1 star Jos, claims that his driving style is closest to two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso among the current Grand Prix field.
Verstappen, contesting his first season of single-seater racing in the European Formula 3 Championship, will become the youngest driver in the sport's history when he takes to the grid next season at 17 years of age.
"I think I have a different style than my dad. Maybe it's a bit more like Alonso," Verstappen explained.
"When he needs to be smooth, he is smooth. When he needs to be saving the tyres, he's saving the tyres. When he needs to be aggressive, he's aggressive. But it's all under control and that's what I like.
"I have shown that in Formula 3 too, during the last few weekends. I think I'm more like him."
Verstappen added that Alonso's ability to extract performance from below-par machinery is also inspiring.
"He didn't have the best car in the last few years, but he still managed to show some nice things," he said.
Verstappen takes Jean-Éric Vergne's seat at Toro Rosso and will partner the ongoing Daniil Kvyat.
