McLaren looks to consolidate fifth position
2 September 2014 – McLaren says its aim for the rest of the season is to secure fifth in the championship standings.
The Woking-based team moved ahead of Force India courtesy of its superior points haul at the recent Belgian Grand Prix, with just two points separating the rival outfits heading into this weekend's Italian event at Monza.
Williams sits 45 points ahead of McLaren in fourth position, with third-placed Ferrari a further 10 clear.
"Our aim for the remainder of the season is both to consolidate our position in the Constructors' Championship by bringing both cars home in the points at each and every race, and also to continue to push hard to improve and refine the MP4-29," McLaren Racing Director Eric Boullier commented. "There will be no easing off on the gas in terms of development, as everything we learn this year will roll into next year's technical package."
Boullier reckons McLaren is making continual progress in its quest to return to the front of the Formula 1 field.
"I feel that the spirit within the team is strong," added Boullier, who joined the team in January. "We're continuing to push forwards, and I'm optimistic that we'll see an improvement to our fortunes before the end of the year."
