Grosjean: Alonso the key to the driver market
4 September 2014 – Romain Grosjean has described Fernando Alonso as "the key to the driver market" this year, explaining that he is waiting on the Ferrari driver to clarify his plans before committing his own future to a team.
Alonso, contracted to Ferrari until the end of the 2016 season, has entered discussions over a fresh deal with the Maranello-based outfit, in the wake of recent speculation linking the Spaniard to former team McLaren.
Grosjean says he has been holding back on an agreement with Lotus to assess potential options elsewhere.
"You have to wait for Ferrari and Alonso and by then the market will have moved," Grosjean told the gathered media at Monza. "I'm sure you [the media] are aware as much as I am and so far nothing has moved much.
"From what I know all the other drivers have a contract in the big teams. Alonso is the key of the market."
When pushed on whether he has had talks with Ferrari regarding a future drive, Grosjean said: "There are always talks and that's why there are managers. There have been a few talks, but you'll just have to wait."
If he does move away from Lotus, Grosjean says is not concerned about any conflict of interest between the team and his management company, Gravity Sport Management, which are both part of the Genii Group.
"It's pretty clear that I have options to go somewhere else if I want to," he explained. "The strength of Genii is to have a few companies but they don't link interests in between their companies. I'm Gravity and I'm in Lotus and they are part of the same big company, but I think they would still be happy to have me as World Champion."
