Merhi 'feels ready' after F1 practice debut
5 September 2014 – Roberto Merhi says he would be "ready" to race in Singapore if Caterham gave him the opportunity.
The 23-year-old Spaniard, a frontrunner in Formula Renault 3.5, tested Formula 1 machinery for the first time during Friday's opening practice session at Monza, where he outpaced regular driver Marcus Ericsson.
Although Kamui Kobayashi has since taken over, Merhi feels the experience has prepared him well.
"At the moment we will be here for the whole weekend, then let's see after that what will go on," he said.
"I feel ready. Singapore is a bit special but I think it would not be a problem. Macau is more complicated!"
Merhi, the 2011 F3 Euro Series champion, added that it was "amazing" to simply drive a Formula 1 car.
"It was great to drive a Formula 1 car for the first time, quite amazing," Merhi went on to explain. "Especially on the out lap when I left the pit lane and went full throttle. I was like, 'this is so fast'. I really enjoyed that!
"I started carefully so that I didn't destroy the tyres. I was not trying 100 per cent as it was important not to make a mistake and also to learn as much as I can from the car. Braking and high speed you cannot push as you don't know how much the car will behave, but the important thing was just to do laps and learn how it works."
