Hembery: Free tyre choice 'impossible'
1 May 2015 – Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery says the suggestion of Formula 1 teams choosing their preferred tyre compounds ahead of races would be "impossible" for the sport's sole supplier to implement.
Force India's Otmar Szafnauer recently proposed that teams themselves could pick the two compounds they want to use at each race to add another strategy variable.
Pirelli currently makes the Option and Prime allocations for all rounds from its dry-weather range, which is made up of Super Soft, Soft, Medium and Hard rubber.
"First you have to make sure that all the teams agree to any new proposal – which is never easy – and in this scenario, you would also have to make sure that all the teams are making responsible choices," said Hembery, when GPUpdate.net asked if the idea is feasible.
"You might find that some of the teams qualifying towards the back of the grid are constantly nominating the Super Soft, and there are some situations where that clearly wouldn't be suitable over a race distance.
"But there is also a logistical element that makes it impossible to do."
