Häkkinen hails 'dream' situation for Bottas
8 January 2017 – Double Formula 1 World Champion Mika Häkkinen has hailed a "dream" situation for Valtteri Bottas, whom he has guided in recent seasons, as the Finn looks set to replace Nico Rosberg at Mercedes.
Rosberg claimed the 2016 World Championship and five days later announced his immediate retirement from Formula 1, opening up a vacancy alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes.
Bottas was quickly installed as favourite for the seat, following four seasons at Williams, with Felipe Massa poised to come out of retirement in place of Bottas at the British outfit.
Bottas is looked after by Aces Management, which is co-owned by Häkkinen, Didier Coton and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, though the latter would end his involvement if the move is completed.
"The situation cannot be better from the driver's side that you are wanted by the team," Häkkinen, World Champion in 1998 and 1999, explained to Finnish broadcaster MTV3.
"Especially with a team which has dominated Formula 1, [such as] Mercedes. This is a dream situation.
"When you get to the team, which is on top of the mountain, and which is able to win championships and races, then it's up to you to develop, to take wins and the championship."
When asked whether he felt Bottas was capable of winning the title, he replied: "Yes, I can see it."
