In photos: How did drivers spend the winter?

11 January 2017 – Shortly after the 2016 finale in Abu Dhabi, drivers travelled all over the world for their winter breaks, and subsequent training camps. GPUpdate.net compiles some of their shots from social media.

Lewis Hamilton / @LewisHamilton

In keeping with a recent trend, Hamilton spent plenty of time in British Columbia, posing for this snowy shot in the mountains. "Blessed to spend my birthday in paradise," the Brit posted last week, after turning 32.

Daniel Ricciardo / @danielricciardo

"Keep your white Christmas. I'm happy with these ones thanks," were Ricciardo's words to the photo above, in his native Australia. He followed it up with a shot of him enjoying UFC coverage and plenty of gym workouts.

Max Verstappen / @Max33Verstappen

Verstappen, a keen sim racer away from his real-life Formula 1 cockpit, kept sharp on this Red Bull-styled rig.

Sergio Pérez / @schecoperez

Pérez headed back to Mexico at the end of a long season. He kicked off the New Year with this sunset photo, alongside the message: "Starting 2017 full of dreams and challenges, ready to make them happen!"

Esteban Ocon / @OconEsteban

Esteban Ocon, who joins Pérez at Force India after half a season at Manor, has been working through a specialised 3.2.1 perform training camp, based in Font-Romeu, a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

Valtteri Bottas / @ValtteriBottas

As rumours swirl over a potential move to Mercedes, Bottas has spent time back home in Finland, taking this stunning shot of a frozen lake. He has also been training rigorously, and squeezed in some ice hockey.

Stoffel Vandoorne / @svandoorne

Vandoorne headed to Bali, Indonesia in December, spending time on the beach, surfing and exploring the spectacular surroundings. He recently embarked on a training camp in Marbella, on Spain's Costa del Sol.

Fernando Alonso / @alo_oficial

On Christmas eve, the latest edition of the Fernando Alonso-Liberbank Foundation charity race took place, the Spaniard once again taking part. He has also been helping youngsters develop their skills at his kart track.

Romain Grosjean / @RGrosjean

Grosjean put his DIY skills to the test as he prepared a new play room for his children, Sacha and Simon. He is now flat out with training ahead of the new season, creating the hashtag #theysaidthecarsaregoingtobefast.

Nico Hülkenberg / @HulkHulkenberg

Hülkenberg captioned this photo with 'Spot Nico' as he relaxed in the mountains at the end of 2016. Renault's new signing has since returned to Monaco, where he has been working in the gym and running in the hills.

Felipe Massa / @MassaFelipe19

Massa retired at the end of the 2016 season but is now set to return to Formula 1 as Bottas' replacement at Williams. He has kept up his fitness in the gym, and posed for this amusing photo with his son Felipinho.

Pascal Wehrlein / @PWehrlein

Wehrlein, another driver yet to be confirmed on the 2017 grid, though poised to join Sauber, rounded out last year in his mother's home country, Mauritius. He holds dual nationality, with his father hailing from Germany.
