Allison to join Mercedes as technical chief
16 February 2017 – Mercedes has announced that acclaimed engineer James Allison is to join the squad in the newly-created role of Technical Director at the start of next month, following the recent departure of Paddy Lowe.
Lowe, who is poised to join Williams after serving a period of gardening leave, held the role of Executive Director (Technical) at Mercedes, alongside Executive Director (Business) Toto Wolff.
Allison served as Ferrari's Technical Director until last year, having re-joined the team from Renault midway through 2013, but the two parties went their separate ways during the summer.
In a statement issued on Thursday morning, Mercedes explained that Allison's position will involve "reporting directly to Toto Wolff, who will have overall responsibility for running the team".
Allison will officially join Mercedes on March 1, the third day of pre-season testing.
"I am very excited to be getting back to work after this time away from the sport," said Allison.
"It's a massive privilege to be given the trust of a position in a team that has done so spectacularly well in the past three seasons (three successive double title-winning campaigns).
"I am really looking forward to playing my part in helping Mercedes go from strength to strength."
Wolff says he is "delighted" to have acquired Allison's services for 2017.
"Our technical team is extremely skilled at every level and at the top of its game after delivering three World Championships in a row," said Wolff, discussing Mercedes' existing structure.
"It wasn't an easy task to find the right personality who can strengthen our experienced group of engineers, give our talented young team members the space to develop and also bring his own vision to this role.
"I think we have found the perfect guy and the right fit with our senior leaders."
