GPUpdate gets to know... Sergio Pérez
15 June 2017 – F1 drivers answer hundreds of questions at each Grand Prix, but how much do we know about their lives away from the track? GPUpdate.net is on a mission to find out more, continuing with Sergio Pérez.
Describe your perfect day…
I would be in Guadalajara, my home city, spending time with family and friends!
What's the best decision you've ever made?
Deciding to be a driver!
What's the biggest mistake you've ever made?
In my career, probably going to McLaren…
Half an hour! I just take a shower.
Romain Grosjean said four minutes…
He doesn't take a shower then! (Laughs)
Do you prefer a lie in or an afternoon nap?
An afternoon nap.
Do you prefer a night in or a night out?
A night out!
What's worse, a traffic jam or airport queuing?
Queuing at the airport! (Smiles)
How do you kill time at an airport?
I try to find a spa, for a massage! Or some coffee.
What's the funniest thing you've ever done?
I don't really remember one funny moment. I have a lot of funny moments! (Smiles)
What's the best prank you've played on someone?
I've done some really bad ones! Once, a friend told me that he wanted to go to a concert. It was just an hour before the concert and he asked me, 'Do you have the tickets?', I said, 'Yes, go to the entrance and say the name', but there were no tickets! It was for a Mexican band.
La Cosa Más Bella! It's a Spanish song.
No singing initiation at Force India?
(Laughs) No! It doesn't happen here, not that I am aware of! (Looks at Will Hings, press officer) Will could be the first one!
How many languages can you speak?
Three! Spanish, English and Portuguese.
Which language would you most like to learn?
I like Italian. It's also very close to Spanish.
Street circuit or permanent circuit?
100 per cent, a street circuit! I mean, the permanent circuits are so boring; if you do a mistake you have 100 metres to run wide. I like street circuits because you cannot afford to make any mistakes. Circuits should be like the old days, where they punish drivers.
Which is your favourite Grand Prix on the calendar?
Monaco, as a driver, and Mexico, for the atmosphere.
If you could add a circuit to the calendar, which would it be?
Imola, I really like it, and I've never raced there. I like the circuit layout, the big kerbs – I like riding big kerbs!
Do you prefer sweet or savoury food?
Hmm, I would choose lemon water and pasta!
What's your favourite film?
Man on Fire.
What's your favourite band?
Maná. It's a Mexican band (from Pérez's home city).
Countryside or city?
Countryside! For the fresh air…
Summer or winter?
Summer! I like the heat…
If you had to take one driver to a desert island with you, who would it be? Why?
I would probably prefer to go on my own! (Laughs)
And if you had to pick one driver not to come with you?
I don't have one!
Who's the funniest team-mate you've ever had?
Kamui Kobayashi. He was a funny guy!
Who's the best driver you've raced against who didn't reach F1?
Hmm, I think in my Formula 3 days, there was a Finnish guy, called Atte Mustonen. He was very good on his day… a bit inconsistent, but when he was quick, he could be really quick!
I think my best overtake was in Monaco, overtaking Jenson Button (at the Nouvelle Chicane in 2013).
What's your best ever race?
I would have to go back to Formula 3, at Monza, in 2008 (won both races from 14th on the grid).
Win races, but not the title? Or win the title, but no races?
Win the title!
Weirdest question you've ever been asked?
Maybe one of these?
(Laughs) Maybe one of these!
