Social media: Who's winning off the track?
18 August 2017 – Social media is an increasingly important tool for drivers and teams to share key moments and communicate with their fans, but who currently tops the off track battle? GPUpdate.net presents the numbers.
In this overview, GPUpdate.net has gathered follower numbers and likes from official accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, three of the most-used social media tools out there.
All teams are represented, though some drivers, such as Ferrari team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen, do not use social media, meaning they are absent from the graphs below.
Drivers who took part in at least one race so far in 2017 have been included.
Hamilton is the clear leader on Facebook, with just over 4 million likes on his official page, more than double the total of nearest rival Fernando Alonso, who has almost 2 million. No other driver has more than 1 million likes.
Hamilton's team, Mercedes, also leads the way on Facebook, with a massive following of more than 11 million, some 3 million clear of Red Bull, and a further 3.7 million ahead of Ferrari. Haas, as F1's newest team, is last.
Hamilton is also the benchmark on Twitter, having recently passed 4.5 million followers, almost 2 million in front of Jenson Button and Alonso. Numbers drop all the way to 18 thousand for Ferrari reserve Antonio Giovinazzi.
Red Bull is a somewhat surprising leader on Twitter (1.9 million), edging out Mercedes and Ferrari in a close battle for top spot, with McLaren matching its Facebook placing of fourth. Haas is also at the foot of this list.
If you though Hamilton's Facebook and Twitter totals were impressive, he is even further ahead of the pack on Instagram, having amassed 4.6 million followers. Alonso is next on the list, some three million followers adrift.
It is another close battle between the teams on Instagram, with Mercedes and McLaren tied on 1.6 million followers each, just ahead of Red Bull and Ferrari. At the rear, Haas is ahead of Force India and Sauber.
