Hülkenberg: P7 is pole position for Renault
16 September 2017 – Nico Hülkenberg has described his seventh-place starting position in Singapore as "pole position" for Renault, given the advantage the top three teams currently hold.
Ferrari and Red Bull fought for pole position at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, with the title-leading Mercedes slotting in behind, amid its relative struggles at the track.
Hülkenberg, as has often been the case this season, led the 'best of the rest' battle, beating the McLaren-Honda drivers to seventh on the grid.
"It's pole position in our world, behind the top teams' world!" Hülkenberg said, after finishing one-and-a-half seconds away from pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel.
"It was always a battle with McLaren in Q1 and Q2, they had the upper hand, but I pulled a lap out of my arm sleeve there, the final lap of Q3.
"I'm very happy to start P7 and I look forward to the race.
"We know the Singapore Grand Prix is unpredictable, anything can happen, you just have to be ready and stay on your toes for the entire race."
Jolyon Palmer missed out on Q3 in the other Renault, taking 11th after a tyre issue on his final Q2 run, but is hopeful of scoring his first points of the campaign.
"We found a lot of pace in the car, especially in Q1, where it felt like the car came alive," said Palmer.
"Q2 was also looking good, but we overheated the rear tyres in the last run, and I ended up losing a lot of time there and wasn't able to improve.
"I am 11th, but I'm not too dissatisfied with that, we get a fresh set of tyres and we are in a good position to score some points tomorrow."
