David Coulthard admits that the one point the McLaren team scored in the Australian Grand Prix was all their performance deserved. Despite being the first team to run their 2004 car - way back in November - the MP4-19 has proved uncompetitive and even unreliable in its first race as Coulthard finished eighth and Raikkonen retired with engine failure.
"Given our performance in the build up to this event and during it that's what we deserve," Coulthard said frankly. "We've not been quick enough in any of the sessions. I don't think anyone was holding me up that much though we did have moments of good pace, but the speed just wasn't there."
"The leaders were certainly too fast for us," Coulthard admitted and added that he was not too surprised by Ferrari's pace. "At the Imola test before I came here I saw Michael do a very quick time at the end of a 15-lap run so I was quite realistic coming here - seeing what they had done."
McLaren are busy building a B version of their car at their new headquarters in Woking, England. Team chief Ron Dennis told journalists at Albert Park that the team has many very different and innovative modifications to come and that would require quite a few changes to their car.
Coulthard, however is resolute on where the team is and where they need to go, "We have to improve and we'll get our heads down and get the job done. During the course of a season things swing around a lot - tyres are a very important part of the package," he said. "There's a lot of Grand Prix racing to be done yet."
