London GP earns big guns' support

8 July 2004

A 'London GP' could be ready to go in two years' time. City mayor Ken Livingstone told reporters after half a million Britons poured into Regent Street that setting-up a F1 race would take 18 months' planning.

''So we're talking two years,'' he added. He said problems - like congestion - are not insurmountable.

''Keep in mind most people who come into central London don't come in a car,'' said Ken. ''Nobody ever questions Bernie [Ecclestone's] planning abilities.''

A second British GP already has the support of Sir Frank Williams. The F1 boss said it would be a 'major step' for Ecclestone. ''A Grand Prix of London could take on the same status as Monaco,'' the Englishman continued.

''I wouldn't have sent a car [to Regent Street] if I didn't support it.''

Ferrari racers Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello also like the idea. ''It sounds great,'' said the six-times champion, in London for a sponsor event. Asked if F1 should come back to London, Brazilian-born Rubens Barrichello replied: ''Why shouldn't it? We do it in Monaco. It would be fantastic.''

A statement said organisers of the 'Regent Street' parade are 'considering whether it should become an annual fixture prior to the British Grand Prix.'
