HANS made injury worse - Takuma Sato

HANS made injury worse - Takuma Sato

27 July 2004

Jenson Button, who nearly choked when a helmet strap worked loose at Hockenheim, was not the only driver in a BAR cockpit who had a tough German Grand Prix. Takuma Sato, who is still fending off a shoulder injury first aggravated in Bahrain, said his seat-belt slipped off the HANS-device whilst racing on Sunday.

He said the 'Head And Neck Device' was already a nuisance. It 'stops the blood from circulating' thus aggravating the shoulder injury, Sato told his official website.  "Ideally I would have rested it for a few weeks. "But driving through the season is constantly damaging it."

Sato, 27, said he had loosened the seat belt for the race at Hockenheim, but that made it slip-off the HANS.  It caused him a 'lot of pain and restriction.'

At 300km/h, Sato tried to loosen the belt further and replace the HANS.

Sato's BAR team-mate Jenson Button and a Honda-powered F1 car are in Cape Town (South Africa) this week for the 'Moment of a Moment' photographic exhibition.
