Belgian police anger F1 snappers

1 September 2004

Belgian police proved unpopular with F1 photographers this weekend as the security forces at Spa Francorchamps reportedly threw their weight around just moments before the start of Sunday's race.

Veteran F1 photographers set up their equipment and took their positions in the special FIA designated area at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix. These photos show snappers in dispute with the Belgian police.

Over-zealous actions from the police left F1 snappers fuming as the officers even threatened to arrest some of the photographers who were wearing all relevant passes and trying to explain that they were fully authorised to be in area.

One of those affected was a veteran snapper from F1Racing.net's photography partner Sutton Images. A familiar face on the F1 scene, Sutton complained at how the police barged he and fellow photographers out of their positions.

The reports from photographers comes amid other revelations that the general organisation of the Belgian Grand Prix was not as great as the race action. There are numerous reports of overcrowded grandstands, and a generally disorganised parking policy which saw some coaches forced to park almost fifteen kilometers away as parking lots overflowed.

Spectators have also complained about the general facilities, with some seasoned F1 goers describing the facilities at the event as amongst the worst on the calendar.
