Clarke: I’ve wiped the slate clean

2 July 2010

It’s been an admittedly less than spectacular start to the season although Jack Clarke aims to put the worst behind him as Formula 2 heads to Portugal this weekend. The Effingham man currently sits eleventh in the championship standings.

Having finished in a strong fourth place at Silverstone back at the start of the season, luck has seemingly deserted Clarke since, not least last time out at Zolder when becoming entangled in the first race accident between Philipp Eng and Will Bratt.

“The end of Saturday was just awful,” Jack described. “It was pretty hard to explain - I was thinking at some point that things would surely turn around, so I just felt sick; there was nothing I could have done and it just seemed to round off some bad weekends for me.

“Racing is a lot to do with state of minds, though, and after a lot of searching on Saturday I went to bed and just thought, 'Go out and enjoy it' - that's what I did in (second) qualifying, where I was bang on the pace and very close to pole. I didn't get a great start in the race and the fact Jolyon (Palmer) jumped me at the start hurt my race because I thought I was quicker than him.

“That meant I had to deal with Dean (Stoneman) and Will (Bratt), so the race wasn't really quite what I hoped for because my aim was to win, but it was still really enjoyable and the most fun I've had in the F2 car.”

The 22-year-old, having picked up another fourth to finally enjoy some success in Belgium’s second race, now heads to Portimão full of positivity. “I've wiped the slate clean from what's happened before,” he continued. “It's like a fresh start for me and, if I can go out and enjoy it like I did in Race 2 at Zolder, I can be bang on the pace.”
