A successful weekend in Germany allowed Russia’s Sergey Afanasiev to move up to third overall in the Formula 2 standings and the 22-year-old admits that he is now ‘forcing himself’ to push towards more success and therefore a successful defending of the position at the final race weekend of the season in Spain.
With Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit preparing to welcome F2 next weekend, Afanasiev will arrive with the advantage in the five-way scrap for third place, with Austria’s Philip Eng, Lithuania’s Kazim Vasiliauskas, Britain’s Will Bratt and Belgium’s Benjamin Bailly all still in contention for the place.
“The weekend was strange, it was up and down, but that's life!” Afanasiev said when looking back at the happenings of Oschersleben.
“I would say the beginning was really great but the rain messed things up, which wasn't so good.”
The Moscow man now concentrates on Valencia, having achieved a maiden Formula 2 pole position last time out before finishing the pair of races fourth and third.
“I'm expecting to do the same job in Valencia, I'm forcing myself to do so,” he stressed. “It's difficult, as usual, but I have to. The fight for the third position in the championship is an important fight and it's going to be a great fight over there - I'm excited about that. I have to get pole and I have to get maximum points.”
