Formula 2 championship organiser MotorSport Vision has announced that both Julian and Johannes Theobald will be joining the championship this season. The Germans therefore become the first siblings to sign up for a new season in the series, which was inaugurated in 2009.
The 2011 campaign will begin at Silverstone this weekend, with the latest pair of signings raising the number of entries to 19. 26-year-old Julian first drove the Williams-built F2 car in July of last year before contesting races at Brands Hatch, Brno and Oschersleben. “I’m happy to return to F2 as I’m very satisfied with the car, the series and the organisation, so it’s good to come back,” he said on Monday.
Johannes, two years his junior, challenged for top ten positions at the final two meetings of last season, having previously placed his motorsport plans on a two-year break in order to focus on academic studies. “I really liked the races I did last year – it was a really good experience. It’s a good car to drive, lots of power and nowhere else can you drive at such a high level for this cost,” he commented.
“I’m very pleased to welcome Julian and Johannes back to F2,” Series Director Jonathan Palmer summed up. “Both drivers acquitted themselves well last season and I have no doubt that, given the opportunity of a full campaign, they will score their first points this year.”
