Kralev beats fighter jet with F2 car

7 September 2011

Bulgaria’s Plamen Kralev was presented with a unique opportunity when the Williams-built car Formula 2 car was pitted against slightly different machinery – no less than a 22,220 horsepower MiG-29 fighter jet.

The duel was staged at the Bulgarian BIAF 2011 air show, which celebrated a century of the country’s aviation history. Kralev – who met Prime Minister Boiko Borisov for the first time - attended after being elected by the National Tourism Agency as Bulgaria’s official global motorsport ambassador in 2008.

On a 600-metre stretch of runway, the F2 car beat the plane by a small margin, with the former having endured a slow start due to cold tyres but the latter struggling on the ground, despite being able to accelerate by 250 kilometres per hour (0-155mph) in less than 500 metres when airborne.
