Formula 2 championship leader Mirko Bortolotti set the pace in first practice at Monza on Friday morning. With a best effort of 1:40.814, the Italian led the way from Romania’s Mihai Marinescu and closest championship challenger Christopher Zanella of Switzerland, with Miki Monras and Alex Brundle completing the top five.
Conditions were ideal as the session started at 10:20am, with Marinescu first to post a lap time before Bortolotti raised the bar on his home circuit, with the margin between the first pair being over two tenths of a second.
Thiemo Storz of Germany confirmed six nationalities of drivers in as many positions as the leading ten was rounded out by Ramón Piñeiro – winner of the last three races - plus Kelvin Snoeks, Jack Clarke and Benjamin Lariche.
Other British representatives Luciano Bacheta and James Cole finished in respective 12th and 19th places.
