Formula 2 championship leader Mirko Bortolotti continued to top the timesheets in the second practice session at Monza, staged on Friday afternoon. With his best lap time being 1:40.731, the home favourite edged out Mihai Marinescu by a quarter of a second as Britain’s Alex Brundle, son of ex F1 driver Martin, completed the top three.
As Bortolotti dipped under his best effort of this morning, Marinescu beat Brundle to second spot by just 16 thousandths of a second, despite a spin at the Rettifilo Chicane during the session; until Bortolotti’s lap time was posted, it was Brundle who had headed the listings.
With the top eight covered by one second, second-placed championship driver Christopher Zanella was sixth, with triple consecutive race winner Ramón Piñeiro eighth. It was a tough session for other British drivers Jack Clarke, James Cole and Luciano Bacheta, who could only muster respective 13th, 16th and 18th positions.
