Mirko Bortolotti will start what could be a championship deciding second race from pole position at Monza this afternoon, having set the overall fastest time of 1:38.979 in Sunday’s qualifying session. The Italian did enough to seal the top spot ahead of Ramón Piñeiro by 0.025 seconds, with Tobias Hegewald back in third place.
"First of all I'm very happy with the session," said Bortolotti. "Unfortunately yesterday we would have had the pace to maybe be on the front row, maybe challenging for pole as well, but I was in trouble because of the yellows. So I just decided to stay out of trouble today and try to put my pace on the track and try to take what I can take."
Miki Monrás recovered from a disastrous opening race to grab fourth on the grid, with Thiemo Storz and Mikkel Mac narrowly in arrears of the Spanish driver. Britain's Alex Brundle failed to repeat his Saturday qualifying performance, but will still start sixth ahead of fellow countryman Luciano Bacheta courtesy of his personal best lap.
Benjamin Lariche took ninth spot at the end of the session, just ahead of Jack Clarke. With only one round remaining after this weekend, Bortolotti can now seal the title by finishing in ninth place or if Zanella fails to take the top step of the podium.
Race 2 begins at 2.40pm local time (BST +1)
