Mirko Bortolotti has sealed the 2011 Formula 2 title courtesy of a dominant victory in the final race of the weekend at Monza. The Austro-Italian driver crossed the line ahead of Ramón Piñeiro and Miki Monrás, with now former title rival Christopher Zanella managing no higher than sixth place at the chequered flag.
A storming getaway from second place starter Piñeiro saw the Spaniard jump into the lead at the first corner, with Bortolotti having to sit back and wait for his opportunity to regain the lead. That chance came just one lap later, however, moving back to the front with a fine move at the first chicane. He then set about pulling a gap to his battling rivals behind, one that would eventually increase to almost ten seconds.
The fight for points quickly turned sour, with Thiemo Storz the first victim after an ambitious move at the apex of the first Lesmo. The German collided with compatriot Tobias Hegewald and slid into the gravel, while the latter rejoined further down the order. Another exciting battle featured British drivers Alex Brundle, Luciano Bacheta and Jack Clarke, with the former ultimately coming out on top in fourth place.
Zanella wound up sixth after what was a rather low-key race for the Swiss driver, with Clarke and Dutchman Kelvin Snoeks close behind. Tobias Hegewald recovered from his early dramas to finish ninth, just seven tenths ahead of Benjamin Lariche who completed the top ten. The overall result will also see Bortolotti test Formula 1 machinery for Williams later in the year, a prize earned through his F2 title.
The season finale takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya in one month's time
