Mirko Bortolotti has claimed the final Formula 2 pole position of the 2011 season in Barcelona on Sunday, with the Champion and yesterday’s winner now aiming to become the driver with the most victories in the history of F2. He will start alongside Spain’s Ramón Piñeiro, who is targeting the championship runner-up spot.
Austro-Italian Bortolotti comfortably sealed the top place with a best effort of 1:37.325, edging out Piñeiro by two tenths of a second; if the latter is going to beat Switzerland’s Christopher Zanella to second overall in the title race, he must win this afternoon’s final encounter of the campaign.
Miki Monras will set off from third, having also finished on the podium yesterday, as he shares the second row of the grid with Romanian Mihai Marinescu. The top six is completed by Kelvin Snoeks and Alex Brundle of The Netherlands and Britain, respectively. Zanella – poised to finish 2011 runner-up – starts ninth.
“I had to test a small thing for qualifying, so I did a quick out and in-lap,” says pole man Bortolotti. “Then we had one set of tyres, so back to normal qualifying, so I’m very happy with this pole position here.
“As I said yesterday, on this track it’s very important to have pole position, so now I’m looking forward to the race - it’s going to be my last race in Formula 2, so of course it’s going to be quite an emotional one. Obviously Ramón needs to win but I want to win, so let’s see what happens!”
