Mirko Bortolotti admits that a switch to DTM would be favourable for the 2012 racing season, but acknowledges that there are a number of options which will require time to organise. This year, the Trento-born driver comfortably sealed the Formula 2 title thanks to victories in nearly half of the championship’s races.
With seven respective wins, pole positions and fastest laps to his name, plus 14 podium finishes from 16 starts, Bortolotti’s 2010 F2 campaign was one of utter dominance. This week, the 21-year-old joined the two-day Barcelona test in order to trial new components ahead of the series’ fourth season next year.
“The main thing is to be in a car and doing the best you can,” Bortolotti told GPUpdate.net. “I’m not the type of guy who is just looking after publicity – I’m trying to do my job, so we will see what happens.”
Having earned himself a Williams Formula 1 outing in the Abu Dhabi Young Driver test, his management team continues to weigh up possibilities for next year.
“I’d like to be doing many things, I’m not the type of guy who has only one goal and says, ‘That’s it’,” Bortolotti continued. “I just want to be racing, so we are working on different things to try and make it happen and build up a very nice programme for next year. There are different possibilities, so we basically have to wait a little bit and then we will have a clear picture of what is going to be possible next year.”
When specifically asked whether DTM is the prime target, which would be following in the footsteps of 2010 F3 Euro Series Champion Edoardo Mortara, Bortolotti replied:
“It has always been a championship that I have liked and which, from my point of view, is interesting. So if it was up to me, for sure it would be a great option and I would like to do it, but I don’t know what is going to happen and whether it is going to be possible. So let’s see what happens…and if it’s not DTM, it will be something else.”
Bortolotti, particularly pleased to have tested a car so late in the year, will now spend the Christmas period with family but is keen to maintain a demanding fitness regime.
