Former Champion Stoneman to join F2 test

27 March 2012

Dean Stoneman is set to enjoy a welcome return to the Formula 2 paddock when testing takes place at Silverstone on Thursday. The 2010 Champion, who for his achievement enjoyed a reward of testing the Williams Formula 1 car, was relegated to the sidelines last year as he fought a battle against testicular cancer.

Two years ago, Stoneman impressed with six race wins and a total of 13 podium finishes, beating Jolyon Palmer to the title. As he became ill, the Southampton driver was forced to cancel Formula Renault 3.5 plans with ISR Racing.

“I'm looking forward to testing the new car,” says the 21-year-old. “I'm still weighing up all options for this year, so returning to F2 is a distinct possibility. F2 is a great environment for me to continue my recovery in a car I know and on circuits I enjoy racing on. We will see how the Silverstone test goes before deciding what to do.”

The 2012 F2 campaign begins on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit on 14-15 April.
