Ultimate driver Mike Devaney is chasing his maiden podium at Silverstone this weekend. With his third qualifying spot he is well underway. Irishman Devaney set a sizzling pace in sunny conditions to finish just 0.119s from pole position for Sunday's second race, having finished ninth in qualifying for the first. His team-mate Esteban Guerrieri struggled to find the speed in his car, however, and finished the two sessions in 14th and 20
th places overall.
Devaney, who has never raced at the track before, built on the strong pace he showed in first qualifying to set his fastest lap while Argentine Guerrieri suffered from oversteer during the first session and struggled to cope with the car's performance over the bumps in the second.
Devaney said: "Fantastic! It's a great result for the team. I couldn't believe it when I saw P3. I thought some of the other cars would have another lap, but they didn't! We knew we had a bit of pace left after first quali and we certainly did! We are closer to the front, time-wise, than we have ever been.
"That pace will come through in the race too. We are traditionally good off the line, although we have not been up against the guys at the front before, so we will see how we go. But it is pretty obvious what I will be aiming to do at the start! My dad scored an F3 race win here, so I have something to live up to!"
Guerrieri said: "Congratulations to Mick, it was a great result for the team. It was a shame we could not hook the car up the same for me, but that is just the way it goes. It was a bit of everything - bumps, brake knock-off, oversteer. We will work on the car to find some speed and see what we can do tomorrow."
