Mortara takes pole in Spain

Mortara takes pole in Spain

21 May 2010

Championship leader Edoardo Mortara has converted the fourth fastest time from practice to pole position ahead of this weekend's fifth and sixth rounds of the 2010 season in Valencia. The Signature-Plus driver will share the front row of the grid for Saturday's first race with Daniel Juncadella, one of two local favourites.

Mortara clinched the best position on the grid with a best effort of 1:28.583 in Friday afternoon's half-hour qualifying session, edging out Barcelona's Juncadella - nephew of former Formula 1 driver Luis Pérez-Sala - by just over two tenths of a second.

Quickest practice man Valtteri Bottas lines up third, alongside leading Briton Alex Sims on the second row, as Marco Wittmann - Mortara's closest challenger in the championship - shares Row 3 with Carlos Munoz.

The second Spaniard, Mücke Motorsport's Roberto Merhi, will start eighth after a qualifying gap of 1.1 seconds covered the field, which is completed by 13th placed Jim Pla.

Saturday's Race 1 begins at 11:25am local time (BST +1)
