France’s Jean-Eric Vergne has extended his championship lead courtesy of a victory in the first of three races at Rockingham. Having started third, the Carlin driver fought his way to the front and eventually led home Columbia’s Carlos Huertas by just two tenths of a second.
It was Britain’s Oliver Webb who started from pole position for Fortec although the Englishman, who struggled to move off the line, had already lost second by the time the field attacked the first corner; Vergne then duly overtook Huertas for the lead at the Deene hairpin.
With Vergne seemingly pulling away, the unrelenting Räikkönen Robertson driver began to launch a stiff attack which involved several challenges for the top spot although the status quo remained in tact until the chequered flag, with Webb completing the podium.
In the National Class, the in-house T-Sport battle continued as Menasheh Idafar finished 13th overall - two and a half seconds ahead of team-mate James Cole - to take the honours.
Race 2 will begin at 11am local time tomorrow (BST)
