Britain’s James Calado led the way as the two British Formula 3 practice sessions took place at Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps circuit on Thursday. The Carlin driver was forced to adapt to changeable conditions, though, as the Ardennes venue’s microclimate proved its worth once again.
Leading the way with a best effort of 2:17.020 in a far dryer second session than the first period, Calado edged out championship-leading team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne by a large seven tenths of a second as the Hitech of William Buller completed the top three.
After the field switched from full wet weather tyres in the morning, the ART of Alex Sims finished the day fourth quickest from Lucas Foresti - the GP3 driver who is replaced at Hockenheim this weekend and makes it three Carlin cars in the top five.
In the National Class, Menasheh Idafar led the way on a best time of 2:25.590 whilst T-Sport team-mate James Cole managed no afternoon lap time at all due to a driveshaft breakage.
