Confusion surrounding Nakajima's drive-through penalty

10 August 2010

Raikkonen Robertson driver Daisuke Nakajima received a ‘drive through penalty’ during Race 3 at Thruxton for apparently overtaking under yellow flags. Somewhat bizarrely the team was already aware that he had possibly been overtaken under yellow flag conditions by another competitor and was awaiting news on the timing screens when the penalty against Daisuke was handed down.

The ‘offence’ was that he had overtaken car 14 Jay Bridger under waved yellow flags. The team questioned this decision with race control, who confirmed that the offence had been committed and a drive through issued. Following consultations with Bridger’s entrant, Litespeed, it was clear that Daisuke had overtaken Bridger at the start, before the first corner, and remained ahead until the drive through. Indeed the track commentator also observed the pass on Nakajima by another car under yellows but the entire incident went unreported by observers.

Post race, Litespeed offered the on-car footage which conclusively showed that Daisuke had not overtaken Bridger and further investigation by the team with TSL Timing has also shown that he was ahead of Bridger up until the drive through. Despite representations at this time there has been no further comment from the organisers.

Team manager Malcolm Swetnam commented: “The race director can only react to information received. He received a report that the offence had been committed from out on track but as it turns out the evidence is pretty clear that this was not the case. Perhaps the whole drive through scenario needs looking at for the future. Daisuke was understandably distraught after the race where he was almost certainly denied a top-eight finish. I hope the organisation will review the events and let their findings be known in due course.”
