British drivers smiling after BRDC media day

24 August 2010

A selection of British racing drivers were on-hand earlier this month in order to pick up a number of media tips from Louise Goodman and Tim Harvey at Silverstone, home of the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC).

With Goodman a self-made journalist, best known for her role on ITV1’s Formula 1 coverage between 1997 and 2008 as well as her current presenting job for the British Touring Car Championship on ITV4, 1992 BTCC Champion Harvey has been a TV commentator alongside Ben Edwards since the 2003 season.

At Silverstone, the likes of GP2’s Sam Bird, GP3’s Dean Smith, F2’s Dean Stoneman, F3's Alex Sims and the BTCC’s Tom Onslow-Cole were all present to learn how the media can be used to promote oneself in the best possible way.

“Media training is a vital part of developing a professional racing driver’s skill set,” said Harvey, Director of the BRDC SuperStars initiative. “Understanding the media’s requirements in any given situation and how best to communicate to a wider audience can be the ingredient that decides a driver’s progression.”

ART Grand Prix driver Bird was also pleased with the get-together.

“It was a really great day,” he said. “I learnt a lot more about how to handle myself in front of the media. I am now even more aware of where I need to improve and will certainly put the techniques that we learnt in place now. It really opened my eyes.”
