Sato claims maiden victory at Zandvoort
14 May 2011 – Kimaya Sato secured the first F3 Euro Series victory of his career at Zandvoort on Saturday afternoon, leading every lap of the race ahead of team-mate Gianmarco Raimondo. Felix Rosenqvist completed the podium in third, finishing benefiting from an early incident at the first corner between Raimondo and Roberto Merhi.
As the race got underway Merhi looked set to challenge for the lead, but he was ultimately pushed wide at the first corner by Raimondo, meaning Sato kept his advantage into the first corner. The Motopark driver established a comfortable gap at the front, while Merhi lost all that he had gained through his strong getaway.
Carlos Muñoz had originally settled into second after the start, but a drive-through penalty for taking to his grid slot incorrectly put pay to his efforts. After the stewards’ decision it was a relatively calm end to the race for Sato who crossed the line with an gap of just under a second back to Raimondo, while Merhi had to make do with fourth.
German’s Marco Wittmann claimed sixth at the chequered flag, collecting an important points finish behind the wheel of his Signature-Plus machine. Daniel Juncadella was next up for Prema, while Daniel Abt, Jimmy Eriksson and Kuba Giermaziak completed the top ten runners at the Dutch venue.
Sunday's Race 3 begins at 11.15am local time (BST +1)
