Juncadella adds to Prema victory tally
7 August 2011 – Daniel Juncadella ensured a clean sweep of victories for Prema Powerteam at the Nürburgring this weekend, maintaining his lead from pole position before successfully gapping team-mate Roberto Merhi to win the final race. The pair finished comfortably ahead of their nearest rival, with Dutchman Nigel Melker completing the podium.
As the race got underway, Juncadella showed no signs of relinquishing his lead, quickly settling into a rhythm at the front of the field. Merhi, who had progressed to second at the expense of Melker, followed his fellow Spaniard into the distance, with the rest of the field unable to find an answer for the pair’s impressive and relentless pace.
Merhi’s persistence in holding onto his team-mate nearly paid off in the closing stages of the race, with the leader going through a late struggle. Juncadella was under some serious pressure to prevent a lunge from the championship leader, but he made no mistakes and held on to take a well-deserved victory at the German venue.
Behind the pair, Melker ultimately came out on top during a scrap for the final rostrum spot with Felix Rosenqvist, holding the Swedish driver at bay after a succession of overtakes. The latter looked set to lose fourth to Signature-Plus pilots Marco Wittmann and Laurens Vanthoor just moments later, but reclaimed the position before the finish.
Daniel Abt and Carlos Muñoz followed closely, while Gianmarco Raimondo and Jimmy Eriksson rounded out the points paying positions. Merhi’s championship lead now stands at 64 points, with fellow Prema man Juncadella sitting in second place.
Round 7 of the championship takes place at Silverstone on the weekend of September 10-11
