Scott Pye claimed his first ever British Formula 3 victory at Rockingham this morning, leading home championship leader Felipe Nasr during a wet reverse-grid race. The Double R driver pulled away comfortably from his pole position grid slot, finishing over ten seconds ahead of his Carlin rival, while Will Buller completed the podium.
"It was all about the start," said Pye. "With the spray and the rain it was going to be difficult to overtake. Kevin and I made very similar starts but I led into turn one and commanded the race from there. After that it was just a case of keeping my head down. I knew that we were quick in the wet and though there was a lot of pressure with Kevin and Felipe behind me I kept my head down and drove away."
Following Pye's strong start, Kevin Magnussen initially settled into second, but Carlin team-mate Felipe Nasr was ready to pounce when the Dane made a costly mistake. It was a similar story for Jazeman Jaafar, who was jumped into the final chicane on the last lap by both Magnussen and Buller. Stewards later penalised Magnussen for cutting the circuit, handing the podium place to his Irish rival.
Magnussen had to settle for fifth after his penalty was applied at the end of the race, with Carlin team-mate Carlos Huertas narrowly behind. Menasheh Idafar, Pipo Derani were next up in seventh and eighth respectively, while Hywel Lloyd and Rupert Svendsen-Cook rounded out the top ten finishers.
