Nigel Melker and Roberto Merhi have picked up the two pole positions which were on offer in the Formula 3 Euro Series qualifying session on Friday afternoon. At Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit, the Spanish Champion elect topped the timesheets although Melker’s individual second best time was quicker than Merhi’s.
Dutchman Melker looked set for double pole celebrations, although Merhi set the timesheet-topping time in the dying moments of the session, meaning the Prema driver – who is likely to clinch the title this weekend – took pole for Sunday’s Race 3. Swede Felix Rosenqvist, Melker’s Mücke Motorsport team-mate, sealed third place on the grid for both Races 1 and 3.
Marco Wittmann of Germany, the only driver who can still beat Merhi to the crown, could manage no more than one sixth and one seventh position for Signature - further helping the top Spaniard’s cause.
Race 1 in Valencia begins at 11:15 local time (BST +1) on Saturday
