Nigel Melker took a lights-to-flag victory during the opening F3 Euro Series race of the weekend at Valencia on Saturday, ultimately crossing the line just under a second ahead of Mücke Motorsport team-mate Felix Roseqnvist. Spain’s Roberto Merhi completed the podium, keeping his bid for the title well on-track.
Pole-sitter Melker comfortably held on to his advantage on the opening tour, steering well clear of the battling behind. From this point onwards no one could reel the Dutchman in, with the podium positions being settled at the first corner. The result also means that Merhi sits 83 points ahead of his nearest rival in the overall championship standings, needing just 12 more to seal the title.
Daniel Juncadella and Carlos Muñoz were next up at the chequered flag, while Mehri’s nearest title rival, Marco Wittman, had to make do with sixth place. Gianmarco Raimondo and Kimiya Sato finished eighth and ninth respectively, just ahead of Jimmy Eriksson and Daniel Abt who completed the top ten.
Race 2 begins at 4.30pm local time (BST +1)
