Merhi: F3 Euro title a very important step
3 October 2011 – Sunday saw two European junior formulae titles decided, with Italy’s Mirko Bortolotti winning the Formula 2 crown at home circuit Monza as Roberto Merhi did likewise in the third Formula 3 Euro Series race in Valencia. The 20-year-old Prema driver, from Castellón, shares his feelings.
“I am really happy to have wrapped up the title in my home race at Valencia and with a victory on top of that,” Merhi commented after Race 3.
“This is a very important step in my career and, together with my title in the FIA F3 International Trophy, it has been a fantastic year for me. I was particularly nervous in the last couple of laps, although I was undisputedly in the lead.
“My maiden season in the Formula 3 Euro Series with Manor Motorsport started in a great way, but then we stalled - we weren't quick at every track. One year later, with Mücke Motorsport, I was a front-runner at those tracks where it didn't work with Manor. The advantage with my current team, Prema, is that we are consistently quick at every track this year.
“From February onwards, my preparation has been more serious - I even stayed away from parties. I don't want to make up numbers, I want to become World Champion.”
