Sims: I didn't expect to claim victory
9 October 2011 – Alexander Sims says his victory in the second British F3 race of the weekend at Silverstone came as a slight surprise, with the 23-year-old returning to the popular single seater category. Having driven in the F3 Euro Series from 2009-2010, the Briton is not lacking experience of the Dallara F308 chassis, but outpacing seasoned regulars by such a comfortable margin was nonetheless more than anticipated.
"I didn’t quite expect to be in the position to win a race to be honest, coming with Motopark who haven’t done the British F3 before, and with a one car team it’s difficult to progress too much," Sims told GPUpdate.net at Silverstone on Sunday.
"They’ve done a great job all weekend so far, I’ve slowly improved and got back into F3 with the Cooper tyre. The conditions today were sort of a level playing field, and we chose the right tyre. We were very fast, the credit goes to the team and the car because there were other cars on wets.
"We clearly beat them on a level playing field, those that were on wets. It was a bit of a stab in the dark with tyre pressures and stuff, but we beat the Carlins and the Fortecs and that lot who have had a whole year of adjustments."
The 2011 GP3 regular then discussed his chances for the final outing of the weekend later this afternoon, a race he starts from 12th on the grid.
"We’ll see what we can do," he added. "Yesterday afternoon in the dry we were stronger than we were in qualifying, we put pressure on the guys ahead so hopefully we can improve, maybe make some overtakes and have some fun."
