Prema Powerteam driver Roberto Merhi converted his pole position into victory during the opening race of the weekend at Hockenheim this morning, scene for the 2011 F3 Euro Series finale. The Spanish driver led home Mücke Motorsport rival Felix Rosenqvist at the finish, while Laurens Vanthoor completed the podium.
A strong getaway from Merhi saw him create a comfortable margin almost instantaneously, with second place starter Rosenqvist initially struggling and dropping to third. However, the Swede quickly established a rhythm and made up for lost ground, moving back ahead of Vanthoor before setting his sights on Merhi.
Rosenqvist promptly closed to within one second of Merhi, but his best efforts were ultimately to no avail at the chequered flag. The 2011 Masters of Formula 3 winner settled for second ahead of Vanthoor, with Marco Wittmann following the latter closely.
Daniel Abt and Nigel Melker were next up in fifth and sixth, with Daniel Juncadella, Carlos Muñoz, Jimmy Eriksson and Facu Regalia rounding out the top ten.
