Despite being out-qualified by Jules Bianchi and pounced upon at the start by Luca Filippi and Javier Villa, nothing prevented Davide Valsecchi from eventually seizing the lead and the championship title in the Bahrain Feature race on Friday.
There may be three races still to run in the latest GP2 Asia campaign but iSport driver Valsecchi is already Champion, having eventually passed the Italian and Spaniard ahead of him before going on to win at Sakhir by 2.7 seconds.
"Everything was perfect," the 23-year-old reported. "I was really nervous about this race because I felt a lot of pressure to clinch the championship this weekend, so I was a little bit worried; so today after the start we had the best car in the paddock and the best driver in the paddock.
"It was really good to win, really good for the team. We are in incredible form at the moment - the car is perfect for me and I am perfect for the car. Tomorrow I will try to win the race but today we did a really good job.
"The championship is won now, which feels fantastic."
